PREP HOOPS ROUNDUP: Vinemont splits with Fairview; West Point sweeps Hartselle

VINEMONT — The Eagles survived a difficult test at home to slip past Fairview 53-48 Tuesday night.

Zack Drake scored 18 points for Vinemont, while teammates Lance Stanley and Tyler Tucker each notched 13. Trey Tucker was good for seven points and nine boards in the win.

The Red and White are now 2-2 on the season.

For Fairview, Tyler Yearwood netted 23 points and hauled in 17 boards, while Austin Fletcher earned his own double-double with 17 points and 15 rebounds.

% West Point 47, Hartselle 35: Ryder Jones put up 16 points, and Tanner Rusk tallied a double-double with 14 points and 10 rebounds in the Warriors’ home win over their former area mate on Tuesday.

Levi Laney added six points to West Point’s second straight victory, and Riley Voce had five. Will Wrenn (four points) and Kobe Smith (two) rounded out the Warriors’ scorers.

Varsity Girls

% West Point 50, Hartselle 45: The Warriors erased an 11-point, fourth-quarter deficit to squeak by the Class 6A Tigers on Tuesday night.

The Maroon and White forced numerous turnovers late via a full-court press and took the lead shortly after.

“The girls played hard, got after it and scrapped for the win,” coach John Welborn said.

Mallory Walker led all scorers with 21 points in the victory, and Jeri Beasley was next in line with 15. Tess Hembree and Bailee Yearwood both had four, while Lillie Burdette and Lexi Bell each notched three.

West Point is now 3-1 on the season.

% Fairview 64, Vinemont 11: Taylor Ann Yeager took off for 25 points and seven steals as the Aggies improved to 3-2 with a lopsided road win Tuesday.

Other contributors for Fairview were Abby Schnittker, nine points; Jada Golden, eight points and two blocks; Lizzie Garrison, six points; Ashley Latham, five points and eight rebounds; Daylia Dean, five points; Kayla Aleman, four points; and Desiree Wilhite, two points and 10 rebounds.

Casey Westmoreland led Vinemont with eight points and 11 rebounds. Hannah Etheredge had two points, and Sarah Smith had one.

% Oneonta 62, Cullman 55: The Bearcats fell just short in a back-and-forth contest with the two-time defending Class 4A champion Redskins in Cordova’s Thanksgiving Tournament on Tuesday evening.

Baylee Johnson led the Black and Gold with 18 points, seven assists and two steals in just 12 minutes, while Taiya Ponder notched 17 points. Christina Skinner had eight points and 14 rebounds, Oakleigh White had eight points, and Sierra Easterwood, Anna Bowden and Anna Evans all had two.

“We lost to a good team,” said coach Jonathan Hayes, who was seeking his 100th victory with Cullman. “I thought our girls played really hard and battled. I know it was a loss, but I’m optimistic that we are getting better little bit by little bit.”

Wallace State Basketball

The Lady Lions moved to 5-1 on the season by cruising to a 79-62 win over Motlow State on Tuesday night.

Morgan Smith went berserk with 33 points, while teammate Haven Albright was good for 18.

Coach Rod Burdette’s squad outrebounded the Bucks by 15 and forced 30 turnovers en route to the double-digit triumph.

The Lions return home next Wednesday for a game against Cleveland State.
