HANCEVILLE — Still riding high from an emotional, one-point home win over county-rival Holly Pond, Cold Springs gave coach Tim Willoughby something to be thankful for on the first day of the Hanceville Thanksgiving Tournament — an ending he didn’t have to fret.
After three straight thrillers, the Eagles were content to build a big lead — and keep it — en route to a decisive 64-44 victory over a formidable Cleveland squad they knew nothing about before Tuesday.
“You worry about a trap game after a big game like last night,” Willoughby said. “But I think this team is maybe a little bit more mature than they were last year. They did what they had to do. They took care of business, and I was pleased with us defensively.”
Cold Springs (5-0) used a 12-0 run early in the third to extend its advantage to 26 points just before the end of the quarter. Cleveland pulled as close as 14 in the final eight minutes, but Triston Chambers, Josh Freeman and Cayde Elliott each tossed in two points late to put away the win.
Chambers charmed with four 3’s, 27 points and one monster dunk, Freeman went off for a quiet 17 points and Elliott dialed in three times from long range — his highlight was a four-point play — in a 12-point peformance. Adam Carney and Derick Isbell both made a trey, and Austin Moore added two points.
Cleveland was the Eagles’ first Class 2A foe. Their first four games were versus two 3As, a 5A and a 6A.
“You know how we are, cardiac Cold Springs,” a smiling Chambers said of his squad not living up to its nickname. “It was good to come out here, play as a team and get a big-time win against another 2A opponent.”
With Cold Springs clinging to a 23-18 cushion, Isbell sparked an 8-0 run to end the first half with a swish from behind the arc. Chambers kept it going with a slick layup in the final seconds and then tipped a Panther pass in the backcourt. The ball sailed right to Carney, who put up the long shot just in time and soaked in the celebration with his teammates when it rattled through at the buzzer.
“Adam’s the kind of guy to knock down those shots,” Chambers said. “We knew the minute he shot it, it was in.”
Added Willoughby, “That’s when we pulled away because it was kind of one of those grind-it-out game up to that point.”
Christopher Corder paced Cleveland with four 3’s and 16 points. Peyton Hazelrig had 10 points.
Cold Springs advances to play Corner, which dispatched Good Hope 58-26, Wednesday at 6:30 p.m.
The Raiders (0-6) trailed only 14-9 at the end of the first quarter but fell victim to a 15-0 Yellow Jacket surge entering halftime.
Tyler Vanderburg led Good Hope with seven points, and Reese Harbison nailed back-to-back attempts from behind the arc early in the third quarter. Noah Tillman and Kainan Smith scored four points apiece, Mason Johnson knocked down a trey and Tyler Elrod had two points.
All 11 Corner players scored at least two points.
The Raiders will play Cleveland Wednesday at 5:15 p.m.
Hanceville, which enjoyed a first-round bye, will face Mortimer Jordan Wednesday at 4 p.m. and Dora at 7:45 p.m.
