T.J.Maxx, the national discount clothing chain, has announced that its new Gardendale store will open its doors on Thursday, Nov. 13.

The store is located in the newly-renovated Magnolia City Place shopping center on Fieldstown Road. It occupies what was a vacant space in a building that originally housed Walmart, and currently is home to Hobby Lobby.

The Gardendale T.J.Maxx is technically not a new location, but a move for an existing store. The company is closing its store on Crestwood Blvd. in east Birmingham, in the old Village East Shopping Center. That store was across the street from the old Century Plaza mall, and adjacent to the site of the old Eastwood Mall.

T.J.Maxx specializes in off-price clothing and accessories, home products, toys, pet products and more. It is the corporate descendant of the old Zayre discount store chain, which had several stores in metro Birmingham until that division was sold to the Ames chain based in New England; that chain later shut down. (The Crestwood Blvd. location was next door to a former Zayre store.)

The ribbon-cutting ceremony will begin at 7:30 a.m. Normal store hours are 9:30 a.m. to 9:30 p.m. Monday through Saturday, and 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. Sunday.

T.J.Maxx is part of a complete makeover of Magnolia City Place, which was originally called Northgate Shopping Center. The renovations were begun by Preferred Growth Properties, a division of Books-a-Million.

The project includes the addition of a Starbucks coffee shop and. most famously, the construction of a new Publix supermarket. The latter has been on the drawing boards for several years. No definite date has been set for the Publix opening.
