WEST POINT — The last week of the high school football season is often bittersweet, with the regular season finale marking the final time seniors will take the field for their soon-to-be alma maters. But for West Point, last Friday’s overtime thriller has extended the Warriors’ season for yet another week.

On Thursday night, West Point was at home in a non-region game against Priceville. The Warriors took the field to fireworks and also started regulation with a bang en route to a 52-21 victory. They scored on the first play from scrimmage when Kobe Smith took a 56-yard stroll to the end zone.

West Point (7-3) pretty much had its way the remainder of the first quarter, scoring thrice more on its next three possessions. Bryant Farley carried in a 9-yard quarterback keeper, and Smith added scoring scampers of 8 and 13 yards.

The Warriors extended their lead to 35-0 following an interception from Levi Laney in the second quarter, cashing in with a 27-yard connection between Farley and Will Wrenn.

Priceville (4-6) finally got on the board with 7:01 remaining before the break when quarterback Aaron Cartee broke loose from the crowd for a 47-yard touchdown run. Lamar Burch added the point-after.

West Point was forced to punt on its next possession but regained control on another interception, this time by Wrenn. The turnover set up a 19-yard touchdown run by Farley.

The Bulldogs threatened late by going to the air. Cartee connected four times with his receivers to get the ball down to the 6 with first-and-goal, but the Maroon and White defense buckled down for a couple of key sacks, the first an 8-yard loss by Alex Hernandez and second by Ryder Jones.

West Point headed to the locker room with a 42-7 lead.

The Warriors continued the scoring trend they started in the first half, with Farley finding Wrenn with a 66-yard scoring strike.

Priceville was determined not to concede and responded with a 4-yard touchdown run by Brandon Lee and a Burch kick to end the third quarter down 49-14.

The Warriors have an ace in the hole in the kicking department with sophomore Tristin Skinner. He was perfect in the extra-point department with seven successful short kicks and a 36-yard field goal in the fourth quarter.

The Bulldogs scored one last time with 1:14 remaining in regulation. Cartee punched it in from 5 yards out, and Burch added the point-after to account for the final score.

West Point coach Don Farley was proud that his team came out and played an outstanding first half with intensity and fire. He hopes the momentum will carry on through the week as the Warriors prepare to travel to No. 8 Parker in the first round of the Class 5A playoffs.
