Good Tuesday morning to you…
Weather: Rain moving in. And not a moment too soon, as it’s been well over a week since metro Birmingham has had any rain at all. Clouds move in to day with a high in the upper 70s. The chance of showers is 40 percent after midnight with lows around 60. Rain, with some storms possible, will continue through midday Wednesday with highs in the upper 60s. Skies will clear and temps will turn cooler later on Wednesday.
One week until elections. Voters will cast their ballots for statewide races on Nov. 4, with Gov. Robert Bentley running for a second term and heavily favored against Democrat Parker Griffith. Likewise, Gary Palmer is considered a shoo-in for his bid to replace retiring Sixth District Congressman Spencer Bachus. The only local election with any drama is the referendum to establish a West Blount Fire District in Hayden and surrounding communities.
Sports: Thursday Night Lights. Nearly all of this week’s high school football games – the last of the regular season for AHSAA teams – will be played on Thursday night instead of Friday, mainly to avoid conflicting with Halloween night on Friday. Our NJN Big Game this week takes us to Minor, where Pinson Valley will seek to gain the second playoff seed in Class 6A Region 6, and thereby get home field advantage in the first round. They will do so with a win plus a Shades Valley loss to Vestavia Hills; the latter is one of the few games on Friday. In eight-man football, Tabernacle Christian will host its semifinal game in the Christian Football Association playoffs this Friday night at Moncrief Park, in a game that kicks off at 7:30.
