CUMBERLAND, Md. — A woman was sentenced Tuesday after pleading guilty to animal cruelty charges in connection with the discovery of nearly three dozen dogs at a rental property that she and her husband had vacated in August.

Carol Jean Detrick, 62, pleaded guilty to three animal cruelty charges and was sentenced to 33 days in jail — one day for each animal discovered at a property at 661 Greene Street in Oldtown, near the West Virginia border.

Detrick’s husband, Robert Lee Detrick, was previously sentenced in the case.

When animal control officials rescued the dogs, the home contained feces said to be several feet deep. Officials described the dogs as “terrified and under-socialized,” adding that they were suffering from eye disease, skin lesions and other ailments. Some, they added, had never seen daylight.

Carol Jean Detrick was fined $500, said to be a token payment toward the thousands of dollars in costs incurred by Allegheny County officials in rescuing and rehabilitating the dogs. The animals recuperated at the Allegheny County Animal Shelter before being made available for adoption.

In addition to her jail sentence, Carol Jean Derrick was ordered to serve three years of supervised probation and undergo counseling. She is also prohibited from owning or providing care to any animals.
