- Senior Holly Posey, seen here during Addison's Senior Night festitivies, set the state record for career assists during Saturday's North Super Regional at the Von Braun Center in Huntsville.
HUNTSVILLE — Holly Posey provided a welcomed wrinkle in what’s traditionally been a ho-hum annual affair for the Addison volleyball program.
The top-ranked Lady Bulldogs secured their 13th consecutive trip to the state tournament and won their third straight North Super Regional title Saturday at the Von Braun Center, but not before Posey took her rightful spot at the top of the state record book for career assists.
The senior, a varsity standout since the seventh grade who transferred to Addison as a sophomore, doled out 29 assists in a 25-13, 25-13, 25-13 sweep of West End to bump her total to 7,662. That put Posey seven clear of Huntsville graduate Chelsea Wintzinger’s previous-best mark, a margin that only grew as she piled on 63 more assists in straight-set wins over No. 7 Mars Hill (25-10, 25-22, 25-6) and Hatton (25-11, 25-11, 25-12).
“That’s pretty amazing,” coach Pam Wilkins said of Posey’s record-setting accomplishment. “She’s a pretty amazing player.”
Posey became the second Addison star to break a state career record during Wilkins’s tenure. Sadie Beam, a 2011 graduate, still has a large lead in aces with 914. Danna Stallings, who played at Addison in the 1990s, is second with 732, according to the Alabama High School Athletic Association’s online records.
Beam recently took over the 10th spot on West Alabama’s all-time list for career digs with 816.
Posey, who also pitched in 14 kills, nine aces, nine blocks and seven digs on the day, wasn’t alone in helping the Class 2A Lady Bulldogs head into next week’s Elite Eight with a 54-2 record. Jessy Taylor let loose for 31 kills, 10 blocks, four aces and 19 digs, Summer Hinton sprung free for 27 kills, 16 aces, four blocks and 16 digs, Jessica Benton chipped in 13 blocks, 13 kills and two digs, Jessica Robinson added 14 kills, eight blocks and two digs, and Callie Brewer had five kills and eight digs. Birthday girl Carley Westmoreland added five kills in the win over West End.
The North Super Regional championship was Addison’s third in a row. The Dawgs’ rode last year’s crown to their sixth state title overall and fifth in 1A. They’ll have their sights set on a second in 2A — the first came in 2009 — when they open the state tournament against No. 6 Mobile Christian at 11 a.m. Wednesday at the Birmingham CrossPlex. Semifinals are set for 3:30 p.m. later that day, and the 2A title tilt will take place Thursday at 10:30 a.m.
Over in the 4A bracket, Good Hope came up just shy of clinching its 13th state tourney appearance under coach Rosemary Brown for the second consecutive year. The Raiders bested Brooks 25-15 in the first set but dropped the next three 25-20, 25-16, 25-18 to finish the fall 36-17.
Stats for Good Hope were unknown by publication of this article.
St. Bernard’s dream season came to a close with a hard-fought loss to Spring Garden. The seventh-ranked Panthers eliminated the Saints with a 25-20, 25-19, 25-17 sweep.
Zana Wilson led St. Bernard with six kills and 17 digs, while Aimme Cortes had 15 digs and an ace. Other contributors were Jillian Ivey, two aces and a kill; Anna Myers, one kill and seven digs; Alli Messick, 10 digs; Abbie Mescher, six assists and a kill; Avy Whaley, two aces; and Sophia Rataj, a kill.
