PREP FOOTBALL: First-round foes known for half of playoff-bound quartet

The postseason picture came into complete focus for a pair of local football teams with the end of region play Friday night. It’s yet to be developed for another two.

Vinemont opened up the playbook in a 27-21 road win at Winston County to clinch the third seed in Class 3A, Region 5. The victory helped the Eagles (5-3) avoid a first-round assignment at top-ranked Madison Academy. They’ll instead head to No. 9 Lauderdale County (8-2), which won the only prior meeting 49-6 in the 2012 postseason.

West Point flourished in the first half, weathered a Lawrence County storm in the second and took care of business in overtime to celebrate homecoming with the program’s first 5A playoff berth. The 21-14 triumph landed the Warriors (6-3) Region 8’s fourth and final seed, which comes with a first-round trek to Parker (8-1). The Thundering Herd are likely to fall from their No. 3 perch in the state rankings following Thursday’s 38-26 upset by Dora.

Cold Springs continued to prove doubters wrong by finishing off a perfect record at Cranford Stricklin Stadium with an emotional 36-33 victory versus Tarrant. The win, paired with Addison’s 27-7 defeat of Southeastern, created a chaotic three-way tie for 2A, Region 6’s second hosting spot.

The easiest solution would involve the Bulldogs (6-3, 4-2) beating Winston County next week, which would place the Eagles (7-2, 4-2) third and Tarrant (4-5, 4-2) fourth. If Addison loses, though, the Alabama High School Athletic Association’s tiebreaker concerning the most victories by defeated non-region opponents wouldn’t be settled until every last regular season game is in the books.

Until then, top-ranked Fyffe (9-0), Gaston (6-3) and Cleveland (7-2) will wait with the first, second and third seeds in Region 7, Addison’s and Cold Springs’ cross region for the first round.
