VINEMONT — The new metal roofing and steel building component manufacturer AGCOR Steel has announced plans to open a new location in Vinemont, which is expected to create as many as 25 new jobs within the next five years.

The company, co-owned by Zac Smith and Scott Seawright, will service agricultural, commercial and residential clients in north Alabama and surrounding areas. The plant is set to open on January 1, 2015, and will be located in the old cabinetry shop behind Apel Steel on Goodwin Road.

Smith, a Cullman native, said they hope to start with approximately 7-10 employees when the business opens — then slowly expand to between 15-25 positions by 2020. The business will encompass manufacturing, distribution and sales.

“I grew up here, I’m a Cullman High School graduate, and it’s great to be home,” Smith said. “This is a great opportunity to give back to a community that has given me so many opportunities over the years.”

Smith thanked several local businesses, as well as local elected officials and the Cullman Economic Development Agency, for support during the development process to get the project off the ground.

Cullman Area Chamber of Commerce President Leah Bolin noted that level of cooperation shows just how close-knit the local business community can be.

“Just hearing all these local businesses that helped him and worked with him to get his start is amazing,” she said. “We’re so excited to help and support your business.”

Vinemont Mayor Melba Patton thanked Smith for bringing his business to the small town, and noted the cooperation involved to recruit a new industry to the area.

“We all work together to help and promote one another,” she said. “The people in this area represent Cullman with a deep faith and love.”

Outgoing county commissioner Stanley Yarbrough was also instrumental in recruiting AGCOR Steel to the area, and said he would do anything within his power to help them be successful. The county, along with the town, agreed to make some road improvements to accommodate the business.

“We want to help make things suitable and get you in as soon as possible,” he said. “Whether its five jobs, or 25 jobs, we’re so proud of it.”
