ONEONTA — Rosemary Brown and her Good Hope volleyball team are going back to the North Super Regional at the Von Braun Center after winning the Class 4A, Area 10 Tournament title on Tuesday.
The Raiders whooped J.B. Pennington (25-20, 25-12, 25-21) before bouncing the host Redskins in four sets (25-21, 14-25, 25-20, 25-19) to grab the hardware — and the momentum — heading into this weekend’s big event.
Kaylee Maddox was selected tournament MVP, while Hannah Smith, Hannah Clay and Alyssa Harlan each notched a spot on the tourney’s honorary squad.
Maddox collected 40 kills and six pass assists during the two matches, while Harlan grabbed 17 kills and five blocks. Jessica King had three kills and one block. Smith tallied 61 set assists. Celina Dillard nabbed five kills, a block and an ace. Angel Baker was good for 12 pass assists, three kills and three aces.
“We’ve come a long way,” Brown said. “We were behind 9-2 in that fourth set and came back to win. We are excited. They don’t ever give up. They keep playing hard.”
Cullman’s season came to an abrupt end following a straight-set loss to Austin (25-23, 25-14, 25-19) in the opening round of the 6A, Area 15 Tournament.
The teams had split a pair of regular season matches prior to Tuesday’s showdown.
Olivia Kontogeorge collected 10 kills and 10 digs, while Anna Evans had five kills and two blocks. Madison Cobbs secured 12 digs, 10 set assists and three aces. Tiffani Schwaiger roped up three aces, two kills and two digs.
News wasn’t much better in the 5A, Area 14 tourney at Moulton, where both Fairview and West Point respectively fell to Lawrence County and Russellville in semifinal action.
The Aggies dropped a four-setter (25-21, 25-23, 21-25, 25-16), while the Warriors were bounced by the Tigers (25-22, 25-13, 25-21). The losses ended the season for both teams.
