Hanceville had nowhere to go but up. Holly Pond just had nowhere to go.

The Bulldogs chased the Broncos around the backfield all last Friday night, swarming to six sacks and a 27-7 homecoming triumph in a county clash of previously winless squads.

Sophomore Kaine Yates accounted for half of Hanceville’s sacks, and senior Christian James chipped in two, a forced fumble and 40 yards rushing to lead the team to its first victory since the 2013 regular season finale.

For its dominant defensive effort, the Bulldog duo landed in the “other notable performances” section of the Alabama Sports Writers Association’s latest Player of the Week package. Good Hope’s Riley Eisner and Reese Harbison also graced the list, as did Cullman’s Justin Patterson.

Hanceville had a third representative — Dant’e Reese — make the cut in the Alabama High School Athletic Association’s weekly Prep Spotlight release. The senior was joined by Yates, Eisner and Harbison.

Reese set the tone for the Dawgs’ delightful night with a 67-yard touchdown tote on the game’s second play from scrimmage. He finished with 163 rushing yards and another score on 17 carries.

Eisner and Harbison were just two of the Raiders’ offensive stalwarts in a 63-40 drumming of DAR that saw the program’s record for points in a game fall for the second time in as many years.

Eisner, a sophomore, slung for 371 yards, six touchdowns and an interception on 18-of-30 passing, while Harbison, a freshman, hauled in seven receptions for 143 yards and a pair of touchdowns. Eisner split his other six-point tosses between Kainan Smith and Austin Reid.

Good Hope’s 63-point outburst topped its total in last season’s opener against Holly Pond by two.

Patterson continued his march toward an All-State selection in the Bearcats’ 33-13 region loss to Decatur. The junior defensive end kept the Red Raiders scrambling with a part in three sacks — he’s now in double digits for the fall — and countless quarterback hurries.

Fairhope’s Dave Kirksey ripped off six touchdowns and more than 300 yards of total offense to snag the ASWA’s Offensive Player of the Week award. The running back reached the end zone on carries of 1, 5, 43 and 31 yards, as well as catches of 35 and 43 yards in a 55-28 win over Davidson.

Lexington’s Wes Shirley and Pelham’s Logan Burnett were also considered for the honor.

Shirley rushed for 299 yards and three touchdowns (8, 22 and 57 yards), threw a 61-yard scoring strike and sealed a 55-40 victory versus Sheffield with a 52-yard pick-six inside the final minute. Burnett dispersed six touchdown passes to five different receivers in a 47-0 shutout of John Carroll. He completed 12 straight attempts at one point and finished 20 of 26 for 360 yards.

Carver-Montgomery’s Lyndell Wilson was the ASWA’s Defensive/Special Teams Player of the Week after piling on 10 tackles, three sacks, a forced fumble and a 42-yard interception return for a touchdown in a 28-17 win against Dothan.

Wilson was picked over Pinson Valley’s Juray Smith and Auburn’s Sage Ledbetter.

Smith returned one of his three interceptions 30 yards for a touchdown in a 31-0 blanking of Center Point, while Ledbetter split the uprights on three field goals of more than 40 yards. The latter booted a career-long 48-yarder and made all four extra-point attempts in Auburn’s 37-7 victory over Prattville.

Dajaquon Bouler nabbed the AHSAA’s Prep Spotlight with a state record-tying 108-yard interception return for a touchdown in Marengo’s 52-36 victory versus J.U. Blacksher.

Bouler beat Pinson Valley’s Smith and Brantley’s Darian Jones for the prize.

Jones pulled down two touchdown passes and returned a punt 54 yards for a score — his fourth kick return for a TD in as many weeks — in a 49-6 rout of previously unbeaten McKenzie.
