PREP CROSS COUNTRY: West Point boys make program history with win at Hanceville Invitational

HANCEVILLE — One of the main reasons Rob Whitesell took his West Point cross country team to Monday’s inaugural Hanceville Invitational was to show support for a fellow county school.

What the coach came away was more than he could’ve ever bargained for.

Jesse Riggs, Nick Johnson and Jesse Farrell whizzed through the well-designed course for a 2-3-4 finish, giving the Warriors just enough for a 10-point victory over Brewer and an 18-point win over third-place Holly Pond.

It was West Point’s first triumph of the season, and, according to Whitesell’s extensive research, quite possibly the program’s first-ever varsity team title.

Riggs, Johnson and Farrell were the Warriors’ usual culprits with respective times of 18:39, 18:48 and 19:05.

“These three are all underclassmen and a great group to build around for the future,” Whitesell said.

Nick Roman (20:00) and Isaiah Osborne (21:34) accounted for the Maroon and White’s other counting scores. They were 13th and 30th.

“This team has continued to improve all year and set new marks across the board for cross country at West Point,” Whitesell said. “I like our chances to come out of the 5A, Section 4 meet next week held at Cold Springs as one of the teams to qualify for state.”

Corey Hammonds (19:20), Parker Smith (19:37) and Jacob Drane (19:47) snagged seventh, 10th and 11th to place the Broncos in contention. Austin Hammonds was 18th (20:30) and Reid Hollis, 22nd (21:12).

Casey Guthery (19:30), J.K. Davis (19:58) and Ethan Yarbrough (20:17) anchored host Hanceville’s fifth-place outing in ninth, 12th and 16th. Jarrett Griffin was 27th (21:32) and Aaron Brown, 35th (22:26).

Good Hope’s Max Bavar was 45th (24:44). Gage Henke (25:26) and Braxton Armstrong (25:30) were 48th and 49th, respectively.

West Point finished fifth on the girls side behind respective efforts by Abby Wilson, seventh (24:28); Gabrielle Sinyard, 29th (30:38); Jordan Skinner, 30th (30:42); Ally Farnsworth, 34th (33:32) and Ashley Clowers, 38th (41:27).

Holly Pond didn’t field a full girls team but landed four runners in the top 30. Haley Higginbotham led the way in 11th (25:38), Katie Burnham was close behind in 13th (25:39), Logan Chambers was next in 18th (26:39) and Demi Alvarez rounded out the group in 28th (30:10).

Good Hope’s Heather Middleton grabbed 12th (25:38), Morgan Eakes was 22nd (28:12) and Julee Turner was 33rd (33:31).
