The Jefferson County Coroner’s Office confirmed that the man was dead, but did not release his name.

The details are still unclear about the incident, which happened at about 11 a.m. on Warrior-Trafford Road about a mile east of the Warrior city limit.

Ragland said the officer is “bruised and battered but is OK.” The officer was reportedly not shot.

The officer, who has not been identified, was taken to a hospital for injuries.

Ragland said the Alabama Bureau of Investigations is investigating the incident. WPD Sgt. Corey Archer also gave a brief statement at the scene confirming what Ragland said, adding that all further statements would come from the ABI.

A man at the scene, Nichren Smith, who said he was the brother of the individual involved in the incident, said the individual was on his way to Trafford to visit his mother when he was stopped by police at a driver license check point east of Sibleyville Road.

A short time later, Smith called The North Jefferson News to say that the family had been called to the coroner’s office at the former Cooper Green Mercy Hospital in Birmingham. Smith also gave the name of his brother to NJN, but we have not been able to independently verify that identity. Nichren said his brother was from Chicago.

This is a developing story; we’ll have updates as they become available.
