DOUGLAS — It seems as though every loss for George Redding this season has been much like reruns of his least favorite T.V. show.
Dropped passes, turnovers, missed assignments, blown coverages and lack of execution have all been plot lines for Fairview so far this fall, and that disturbing trend continued Friday night against Douglas.
The Aggies trailed early and fought back late but were unable to make plays when needed in the fourth quarter, falling to the Eagles 27-14 to drop to 2-6 on the season and 0-6 in Class 5A, Region 7 play.
“That’s really been our M.O. this year,” Redding said. “We’ve been working really hard to fix all those things, but we still have so many self-inflicted wounds. Credit to Douglas, though. They played well. We’ve just got to keep working on the little things and keep out of bad situations.”
Fairview opened the game by driving into Douglas territory but turned the ball over on downs when quarterback Hayden Maples was hauled to the ground on a fourth-and-6 from the Eagle 43-yard line.
Douglas didn’t waste any time finding its offensive groove, as senior running back Gary Johnson toted the home team 57 yards and found the end zone on a 3-yard scamper to give his squad an early 7-0 advantage.
Following a trade of punts, the Aggies’ Logan Brooks found some rhythm on the ground early in the second quarter. The Guntersville transfer ripped off a 23-yard dash before tying the game up with a 1-yard run early in the frame.
The Purple and Gold forced a fumble on the Eagles’ next drive but coughed it up just two plays later, giving Douglas prime field position.
Johnson made them pay, too, completing a 29-yard pass to Tyler Garrett down to the 1-yard line before punching in for his second score of the contest one play later. Johnson was a terror for the Red and White on both sides of the ball, rushing for 75 yards and nabbing several tackles for loss on defense.
“He’s definitely got a presence on the field,” Redding said. “He made it tough on us when we had the ball.”
Douglas went on to add another score just before halftime on a 48-yard pitch-and-catch from quarterback Payton Tinker to Garrett to grab a 19-7 cushion.
It took almost the entirety of the third quarter for the Aggie offense to finally wake up from their slumber. Maples reeled off three straight completions of 22, 8 and 23 yards to set up Brooks for his second score of the night on a 14-yard scamper to cut the deficit to just six points.
“Logan was great for us tonight,” Redding said. “He’s quiet and humble. I like that in a player. He comes in, gets the job done and lines right back up to do it again. He was a bright spot for us.”
The drive of the game came on the Aggies’ opening possession of the fourth quarter, as they marched all the way to the Eagle 4-yard line on just six plays to set up a first-and-goal situation to take their first lead of the game.
However, Maples was sacked on first down before completing two short passes to bring up a fourth-and-goal from the 3. Unfortunately for the Purple and Gold, the senior signal-caller’s pass attempt was swatted away from his receiver at the last moment.
“We’ve had a lot of that this season,” Redding said. “A few plays here and there and the whole game could be different. But that’s why you line up and play the game. We just aren’t playing good, consistent football right now.
The Aggies had a couple of chances to get the ball back, but Johnson was again the deciding factor, converting two critical third downs before Dorsett broke the road team’s back on a 60-yard scamper around left end to seal the deal for good.
Brooks gained 90 yards on 18 carries to go along with the two scores. Maples was 13 of 25 through the air for 129 yards and an interception. Antonio Taylor hauled in five passes for 56 yards, while Sambo Woods collected four receptions for 47 yards.
Dorsett and Johnson paced the Eagles to a team total of 240 rushing yards.
With playoffs out of the picture and just a couple of games left this season, Redding said he expects his team — especially the seniors — to come out and lay it on the line despite the lack of a true goal moving forward.
“When you suit up and compete, there should always be a level of self-motivating and pride,” he said. “When the line is drawn in the sand, you compete. End of story. I don’t expect us to stand down by any means.
Fairview will host Butler at Cullman’s Oliver Woodard Stadium next Friday night.
