Hayden looked early on like it may have a shot at its first win of the year, but Springville came back in the second half to take a 39-21 victory Friday night.

After being delayed for an hour and half due to lighting, Springville scored first on a 22-yard run by Isaiah Benson. Frederick Jeppessen added to point after to give the Tigers a 7-0 lead with 10:09 in the opening quarter.

Hayden’s Colton Shirley capped an 80-yard drive with a 5-yard scoring run. Tim Curry found a wide open Zach Bradford for the 2-point conversion to give the Cats the lead at 8-7 with 6:24 remaining in the first quarter. It was Wildcats’ first lead at any point so far this season.

After Hayden’s defense took over on downs at the 48-yard line, Eddie Bolton scored from three yards out. The key play of the drive came on a fourth down, when Joel Ciriello ran the fake punt for six yards and a Wildcat first down.

Springville tried a 33-yard field goal with just over a minute left in the half, but the kick failed. Hayden carried a 15-7 lead into the locker room at intermission.

The Tigers received the second-half kick and promptly marched in for the score. Benson scored his second touchdown of the night on a 1-yard run. The point-after kick failed but Springville had cut the lead to 15-13 with 8:24 on the third-quarter clock.

After forcing a Hayden punt, Springville took over at their 43, and Hunter Richardson capped the drive by scoring from one yard out to give the Tigers their first lead of the night. Hayden’s Tim Curry knocked down a pass in the end zone to nullify the try for two points.

The floodgates opened in the fourth quarter, though, and it wasn’t rain but a deluge of Tigers scoring. Springville scored on the first play of the final period on a 67-yard run by Jordan Byrd.

Hayden scored on the first play following the kickoff on an 80-yard pass from Curry to Josh Duncan with 11:25 left in the game. But Springville scored twice on Benson runs in the final five minutes, first for 42 yards and then for 12.

Hayden’s Ciriello had 80 yards on 17 carries, and Duncan had 80 yards receiving on the one catch for a touchdown.

Reid Trimble led the Hayden defense with 10 tackles, one for a loss. Jeremy Standfield had nine, also with one for a loss.

The Wildcats (0-7, 0-5 region) will host rival Mortimer Jordan for Senior Night next Friday night.
