GRANT, Ala. — Locust Fork avoided the weather issues that plagued many area football games Friday night, but D.A.R. saw plenty thunder and lightning from the visiting Hornet football squad in a 54-13 victory.
Quarterback Todd Goodwin’s aerial attack was on target, as he threw four touchdown passes for the night.
The Hornets raced to a quick 14-0 lead in the first quarter before many fans had settled into their seats. Micah Stephens opened the scoring as he tiptoed in from three yards away. That was followed by a Goodwin touchdown pass to Chase Biles for a 73-yard bomb.
Penalties and turnovers helped the Patriots score a pair of touchdowns on runs by quarterback T.J. Steele, but those scores were offset by more lightning and thunder from the Hornet offense.
Stephens scored his second touchdown of the evening on a 6-yard jaunt, then again on a pass reception of 35 yards from Goodwin.
Goodwin later found Biles again for a 27-yard pass and run touchdown. Dakota Karluk converted two of the three extra points to give the Hornets a 34-13 halftime edge.
The second half was all Locust Fork, as the penalties and fumbles of the first half disappeared and the Hornet defense shut down the Patriots, holding them to just 63 total yards after intermission.
Goodwin tossed his fourth touchdown pass of the night in the third period, as he found Jake Branham all alone behind the DAR secondary for a 27-yard scoring play.
Later, a Biles punt return of 32 yards set up the Hornets at the Patriot 16. With the reserves now on the field for Locust Fork, running back Hayden Jackson sprinted 21 yards for a touchdown early in the 4th quarter.
Reserve quarterback Michael Reid led a 62-yard scoring march on the next Hornet possession, with the touchdown coming on a 10-yard run by Drew Rogers. Karluk’s extra point was blocked after a bad snap.
Locust Fork moves to 6-1 overall and 4-1 in Class 4A Region 7. They will host Priceville next Friday for homecoming.
