All agree now: Pinson’s bicentennial celebration set for April 11

Organizers of Pinson’s bicentennial celebration and the city council have reached a consensus on when that celebration will take place.
The date is now officially set for April 11, which was the date the members of the Pinson Historical Society had been aiming toward for some time. That date was originally chosen because it would have been when the annual City Fest would normally be held — traditionally on the first Saturday in April, but that date falls on the day before Easter in 2015. The following Saturday will be used instead.
The agreement came after Mayor Hoyt Sanders announced in the previous council meeting that he would like the event to be held in late May, to coincide with the scheduled opening of the new Pinson City Park. That plan met with concern from society members, who had already been organizing for April instead, based on previous discussions with city officials.
“We’ll maybe hold the park opening in conjunction with movies in the park,” Sanders said during Thursday night’s regular council meeting.
The council will hold a work session with society members on Oct. 30.
In other business, the council approved the annexation of a sector of the Lea Anne Gardens subdivision, and subsequently accepted the rights of way of streets in that sector. The council then voted to finish paving work on those streets, a job left unfinished by the developer.
The amount of $17,150 “is almost fully covered by the [performance] bond,” Sanders said.
The council also approved a change order in the contract for the new park’s construction, necessitated by federal regulators because some paths and parts of the disc golf course would fall within a designated floodway. An additional $6,500 will be spent for the required no-impact certification.
