The McAdory Yellow Jackets took advantage of two key Pinson Valley mistakes, on their way to spoiling a homecoming evening with a 17-0 win over the Indians Friday night.
The first error came after the Indians had taken the opening kickoff and marched into McAdory territory. However, the drive was halted at the Yellow Jacket 33-yard line, and with the Indians in punt formation, the snap from center sailed over of punter/quarterback Errius Collins. He had to race back and fall on the loose football at his own 42.
McAdory moved the football down to the Indian 6-yard line before being halted, and placekicker Eduardo Garcia-Enriquez booted a 23-yard field goal with 4:29 left in the first quarter.
Neither team mounted much of any threat during the remainder of the first half. The Tribe did manage to move into Yellow Jackets territory late in the second quarter but on a fourth-and-6 play from the McAdory 27, running back Nick Gibson was held to a 1-yard gain and McAdory took over on downs.
Pinson Valley’s first possession of the second half carried them as far as the McAdory 21, but on fourth down placekicker Saul Rios was wide left on a 37-yard field goal attempt.
After forcing McAdory to a three and out, the Indians had great field position at the Jackets’ 46. But four plays later, Collins was separated from the football and McAdory linebacker Khalid Leonard scooped up the loose ball, sprintin 60 yards for a touchdown. McAdory went ahead 10-0 with 1:20 remaining in the third quarter.
Pinson’s next possession ended on downs at their own 48 yard line when Collins’ fourth-down pass was batted down. On the next play, McAdory quarterback Jordan Jones found receiver Willie Langham running free behind the Indians secondary for the only offensive touchdown of the evening.
McAdory’s defense picked off two late Pinson Valley passes to preserve the shutout.
The Jackets defense also clamped down on Gibson, who carried the ball 16 times in the first half for only 28 yards, and ended the evening with only 38 rushing yards on 22 attempts. He did not play in the fourth quarter.
Desmond Williams was the leading receiver for the Tribe with four receptions for 45 yards. The Indians outgained McAdory 221 to 165 in total yardage, but the fumble and subsequent touchdown by McAdory and the two late interceptions stymied the Pinson attack.
McAdory moves to 5-0 on the season with the victory and they will return to regional action next week with a visit to their neighborhood rival Bessemer City. Pinson Valley drops to 2-4 on the season after their third consecutive setback. They will get back into regional play next week with a visit to nearby Huffman.
