ANNISTON — It’s been a rough start for Hayden’s football season, as the Wildcats are still in search of their first points after three games, thanks to a 34-0 loss at Anniston on Friday night.
The Bulldogs opened the scoring on a 7-yard run by Lemuel Heard midway through the first period.
Hayden had a couple of big plays from their defense in the first half to keep Anniston from scoring again. The first came on a tipped pass in the backfield by defensive lineman Travis Putman, and the other came late in the second quarter when cornerback Colton Shirley broke up a pass at the Dogs 3-yard line.
Hayden’s offense failed to threaten on their opening drive of the second half, and the Dogs took over at the 46. Heard would get his second touchdown of the night on a 14-yard run. Da’Monte Miller ran the two point conversion in to up the lead to 15-0 with exactly six minutes left in the third period.
Anniston would score on their next possession when Quintavious Dobbins scampered in from 10 yards. The kicked failed, but the lead was 21-0 with 1:30 remaining in the third quarter.
Hayden’s first scoring threat of the night was snuffed out by an interception at the3-yard line early in final period.
The Bulldogs scored again on a 37-yard pass from Dobbins to Miller, and finally on a Savious Bethune 10-yard run with just under two minutes in the game.
Heard led the Bulldogs with 153 rushing yards on 18 carries. Anniston gained 309 yards on the ground, and 404 yards overall.
The stat sheet wasn’t any kinder to Hayden, which amassed just 58 yards total offense, including just one completed pass for minus-5 yards. The Cats were also intercepted twice.
Eddie Bolton ran for 42 yards on 13 carries for the Wildcats.
The loss drops Hayden to 0-3 overall and 0-2 in the region. They host Moody next week.
