Friday, time for the happy dance…

Weather: Some storms. A cold front drifted into the state from Tennessee overnight, bringing with it a line of thunderstorms. That line will stall out over central Alabama today, meaning that we will have a 40 percent chance of scattered thunderstorms today and tonight, with highs in the upper 80s today and nighttime lows in the upper 60s. Rain chances diminish through the day Saturday with highs in the lower 80s, and Sunday will see isolated showers with highs in the middle 80s.

AEA head on hot seat? It’s a regularly-scheduled meeting of the Alabama Education Association’s board of directors tonight in Montgomery. But after board members received a letter from longtime former AEA boss Paul Hubbert that ripped into his successor Henry Mabry, there’s a good chance that Mabry’s future may be up for discussion. Hubbert said in his letter that the teacher’s union was in a crisis, with Mabry having spent the group into a deep financial hole while revenues have dropped precipitously.

Sports: A long, long time. Eleven years, in fact, since Mortimer Jordan beat Gardendale in volleyball. Rebecca Recke was the coach, and Kelsey Treadaway was a standout senior. Now Treadaway is the coach, Recke’s daughter is on the court, and the Blue Devils came away Thursday with a five-set win over the Rockets. Natalie Johnsey led Jordan with nine kills and nine blocks. Taylor Holt paced Gardendale with 13 kills… Football: Another Friday night filled with high school football is on tap, and the NJN Big Game this week features Pinson Valley at Gardendale in a key Region 6 showdown. Elsewhere: Jordan is at Moody, Fultondale hosts Prattville Christian, Corner heads for Carver, Hayden goes to Anniston, Locust Fork is at Westminster Christian and Tabernacle Christian goes to Columbus, Miss. to play Victory Christian.
