Football: Fairfield 35, Corner 13

FAIRFIELD — Vanlandin Spencer has an unusual first name, which members of Corner’s football team will no doubt remember for awhile — if only for the four touchdowns he scored against them in a a 35-13 win for Fairfield on Friday night.

Spencer scored on an 18-yard run just 103 seconds into the game, then scored again from 43 yards out a little more than a minute and a half later. He tacked on another touchdown on a 4-yard run midway through the first quarter.

Spencer added his final score on a 15-yard run with 5:27 left in the first half.

The Yellow Jackets had few answers for the Tigers’ athleticism, but were able to get on the scoreboard with a 1-yard touchdown from quarterback Chase Best in the first period. Running back Drennen Hutchins scored on a 30-yard ramble in the third quarter; he ran for 83 yards on 12 carries for the game.

Darrien Evans added a 52-yard touchdown run for Fairfield in the final period.

Spencer finished the night with 247 yards rushing, out of the 389 yards the Tigers gained on the ground.

Corner countered with an air attack in which Best went 10-for-26 with one interception, for 162 yards. The Jackets gained 307 yards in total.

John Bassett had six tackles and four assists for the Corner defense, with two tackles for loss. Bailey Graves added seven tackles and a forced fumble.

Both teams were plagued with penalties, with most of Corner’s 12 flags for 135 yards coming in the first half.

The Jackets (1-1, 0-1 region) travel to Carver in north Birmingham next Friday night.
