Jefferson County Sheriff’s deputies caught a man who ran away during a traffic stop, leaving behind a 4-year-old girl — plus a handgun and lots of heroin.
The incident occurred Friday afternoon in the 1900 block of Center Point Parkway, between Walmart Neighborhood Market and Whataburger. A sheriff’s spokesman said that Altrice Darone Ragland, 24, of Eastlake was pulled over for a traffic stop, which seemed to go normally at first. But then Ragland got out and fled on foot, leaving behind the young girl, the gun and 50 bags of heroin.

Ragland was caught in short order. He is charged with trafficking in heroin, attempting to elude, assault, resisting arrest, endangering the welfare of a child and carrying a pistol without a license.
Efforts to locate the girl’s mother have been unsuccessful so far. The girl will be given over to the Alabama Department for Human Resources.
Ragland was being processed at the Jefferson County Jail as of late Friday afternoon; bond had not yet been set.
