After more than a five-year wait, some Morris residents are happy to have a paving project finished in their neighborhood.

Residents at the Overbrook Highlands subdivision have been showing up in force at council meetings, writing letters, making telephone calls and talking to the press in attempts to get a final coat of asphalt on their streets.

Only the base coat was down; it was worn in places and had grass and weeds growing through in other places. There were also flooding problems because the curbs and gutters were above the level of the unfinished roads.

One resident, Cindy Berry, had filled numerous potholes herself with concrete.

There are about 50 houses in the development.

Overbrook resident Dan Carre, who is an officer in the homeowners association, said this week that Clint Singletary finished the job on Thursday.

“He still has some minor touch-ups to do, but the majority is done,” Carre wrote in an email. “As you might imagine, we are all very happy with having paved streets in our neighborhood.”

The town of Morris had no authority to do any maintenance on the streets because ownership of the roads had not yet been turned over to the town.

An official said Tuesday that the town must receive a letter from the developer stating that the paving is complete. After that, the town can take ownership of the streets in order to maintain them.
