It’s Monday, and we finally have Internet access again — a not-so-great start to the work week…

Weather: Hit-or-miss rain. There’s a 20 percent chance of scattered showers and thunderstorms this afternoon. Otherwise, it will be hot (but not as hot as last week) with highs around 90. Rain ends tonight with lows in the upper 60s. Tuesday will be sunny with highs in the lower 90s.

Shake-up in wine country. The Napa Valley region of California is recovering from an earthquake that hit the area Sunday morning. The quake measured 6.0 on the Richter scale, and heavily damaged numerous historic buildings in the city of Napa. There have been no deaths so far, but there have been a handful of people critically injured. It’s the worst earthquake in the San Francisco Bay area in 25 years, when a 6.9 quake rocked the area during the World Series game between the Giants and the Oakland A’s.

Historic heights on Wall Street. The S&P 500 Index, the widely-followed broad-market stock indicator, hit a big milestone shortly after markets opened this morning. The index topped the 2,000 mark at about 9 a.m. Central time. Monday’s early rally came from news that European bankers would continue to ease monetary policy to stimulate the economy, plus reports that Burger King was making a move to acquire the Tim Hortons restaurant chain, an iconic Canadian company that was briefly a part of Wendy’s a few years ago.

Sports: Not quite. The USA women’s national softball team, which includes Mortimer Jordan and Alabama Crimson Tide star Haylie McCleney, fell short in its bid to win the 2014 ISF World Championship. Japan won its second straight title, defeating the United States 4-1 in the championship game. McCleney was 1-for-3 in the final contest. She finished the 44-game national-team tour with an overall batting average of .398 and a slugging percentage of .558. She also stole 15 bases, while being caught twice… Football: The NJN Big Game this week features Vincent at Corner, as the Yellow Jackets begin the regular-season in Class 5A for the first time ever. Corner defeated Hanceville 27-7 in their jamboree game Friday night. In other Friday results, Fultondale beat Tarrant 52-31, Pinson Valley lost to Hartselle 27-21, and Locust Fork blanked Montevallo 47-0. In eight-man football, Tabernacle Christian evened its record at 1-1 with a 36-6 win over Kingsway Christian in Douglasville, Ga.
