LOCAL SPORTS: Midnight 5K brings out droves of runners for annual Parks and Rec event

Cullman's Kyle Norris, left, and St. Bernard's Steven Mami, right, cool down after finishing their 5K run on Saturday.

The city of Cullman was mostly quiet early Saturday morning.

However, if someone listened closely enough, they just might have been able to hear the rumbling of runners’ feet that reverberated throughout the darkness.

The 22nd annual Midnight 5K run once again didn’t disappoint for those attending, as more than 650 participants rolled out of their beds to shoot for personal-record times — or just be a little nuts — at the Cullman City Parks and Recreation Department’s unique showcase.

Austin Duckworth, 25, was the men’s overall winner following a solid mark of 15:43, while his friend and co-worker Elena Linn, 28, garnered the same honor in the women’s division with a time of 17:21.

The two running enthusiats share a workplace at the aptly titled Trak Shak Running Shop in Birmingham. According to Duckworth, it’s pretty common for him and Linn to put in extra work after clocking out.

“We do plenty of training together,” he said. “It’s definitely nice to come down here and both of us win the top spot. The $250 is a nice bonus for me as well. It’ll help fund some more races.”

Linn, meanwhile, garnered an extra $100 to go along with her $250 winner’s prize after she set the women’s course record by a whopping one minute and four seconds.

With some big plans just around the corner, the extra cash couldn’t have come at a much better time.

“I’m getting married in October and everything costs a lot of money,” Linn said with a smile. “It’s a nice surprise. I didn’t have any idea what the record was, but I knew I was going pretty good. It’s great to win. It’s my second time to run this and it was a lot of fun once again.”

Added Duckworth: “This is a great event I think. Especially when you have been at work on Friday and you’re like, ‘Let’s do something a little different, fun and crazy.’ I just came out here, ran hard and let things roll.”

Waid Harbison, director of marketing and programs for the parks department, said attendance was up from last year and cited weather as being an important reason why.

“Things went very smoothly,” he said. “When it doesn’t rain and it’s 65 degrees, a lot of people are going to come out to run. Anytime we do something like this, it’s nice to see a big turnout. It’s all going to benefit the people of Cullman, so it’s good that they come out and support it.”
