Jefferson County Deputy Coroner Phillip Russell said that Michael Wayne Marsh, 47, of Hayden was killed when the Jeep he was driving collided with an 18-wheeler that appears to have jacknifed.

The crash occurred at about 4:15 a.m. near exit 280, adjacent to the former Dewey Barber Chevolet location on the south end of Warrior. Marsh was declared dead at the scene at 4:52, while the truck driver was seriously injured and taken to UAB Hospital, Russell said.

Alabama State Troopers are still investigating the incident as of Friday afternoon, trying to ascertain the cause. The Jeep was destroyed, while the truck overturned on its side.

The crash took place in the southbound lane, and backed up incoming rush-hour traffic for several miles.
