A man accused of fatally shooting a woman while she was holding her newborn baby has been convicted of capital murder.
Corderious McClellan was found guilty Thursday in the death of Sherri Williams, who was holding her 10-day-old baby while she stood in the doorway of her Birmingham apartment in April of 2013.
Prosecutors say Williams’ brother was likely the target of the gunfire and McClellan’s attorney, Erskine Mathis, says the shooting was accidental. Mathis argued that the jury should instead consider convicting McClellan of reckless manslaughter.
McClellan’s sentencing is set for Oct. 3.
