Bobby Winette spent 30 years as a teacher and a coach at Corner High School. Although he thinks he did well in both jobs, he knew which one he liked better.

“I couldn’t wait to get outside at the end of the day and coach,” he said. After retiring in the spring, Winette wasn’t content to just take it easy. He wanted to stay active, and it didn’t take him long to figure out how.

Winette is currently a certified golf instructor at the Greenbriar Golf Course in Morris. He teaches all age ranges, from the middle- and high-school aged kids he’s taught for years, to retirees. He said instructing older students is a new challenge for him.

“I’ve got some great guys out here. They still have that youthful enthusiasm,” he said.

He said he likes working at Greenbriar because it’s a great course for beginners; he said the fact that it’s a par three course encourages new golfers to work on the details of their game, like putting.

“I try to teach them the beauty of the game as well,” said Winette. “You couldn’t ask for a better place to do it. I mean, look at my office.”

He said it’s actually easier to teach people who are brand new to the game as opposed to more experienced players.

“They’ve picked up bad habits that are ingrained into them,” he said. “It’s a lot harder to learn how to start over than to learn a new skill.”
