Here’s a look at what we’re working on for the Feb. 4, 2009, edition of The North Jefferson News.

Warrior Council puts off Web site ambitions

In light of financial problems, the Warrior City Council voted Monday to delay hiring a Web site developer.

Mayor Rena Hudson was for hiring Amy Baker Johnson of Warrior, who offered for $4,150 to create and maintain a City of Warrior Web site for three years. Johnson has eight years of experience as a Web site developer.

Previously, the Regional Planning Commission of Greater Birmingham had quoted the city a price of $5,500 plus $300 a year to create and maintain a Web site for Warrior.

“I know we’re in a crunch, but this is pro-active. We’re going to have to get Warrior more actively exposed,” said Hudson.

Council votes to give ‘Hasso’ a permanent home

Gardendale Police Sgt. Darryl Sutton has a new permanent roommate — a 9-year-old German Shepherd with a distinctly German name.

The Gardendale City Council on Monday approved a resolution declaring drug dog Hasso von Vetzberg surplus property. The dog was donated to Sutton as part of the measure.

The gesture won’t bring any major changes to Sutton or his family because the dog has been a fixture at their home since 2005, the year Sutton was first partnered with the dog.

“The dog is not just a work dog,” Sutton said. “He grew up with my little boy. He was my partner and he’s part of the family.”

School, seniors combine on spring project

Briana Morton’s classroom almost could have been a corporate board room on Friday, with students giving a professional presentation to a group of community representatives.

Instead, it was an eighth-grade reading class at North Jefferson Middle School (NJMS). But the class had done its research.

Morton’s class is proposing to join forces with the Kimberly Senior Center to create a community garden at the school.

In Sports

North Jefferson schools qualify 32 wrestlers for this weekend’s State Championships in Huntsville. And in basketball: Gardendale’s boys nearly knock off the state’s top team, while the Mortimer Jordan girls advance in area tournament play.
