- The Birmingham Record Collectors will induct songwriter and singer Barbara Wyrick into the hall of fame on Aug. 17 during the organization's annual record show, held at the Gardendale Civic Center
North Jefferson County will be the site of one of the largest record shows in the country this month.
The Birmingham Record Collectors will host its annual record show Aug. 16-17 at the Gardendale Civic Center.
More than 80 dealers will be on hand with tens of thousands of LPs, 45s, CDs and other items.
The show is Aug. 16, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., and Aug. 17, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Admission is $3 per person.
The Birmingham Record Collectors (BRC) has members worldwide, including from Germany, Japan, England and Australia, as well as all across the United States, according to member Don Campbell of Morris.
“This is the biggest record show in the South,” Cambell said. He has been a member of BRC for five years.
“Our purpose is to preserve old music and to maintain lasting friendships,” he said.
In addition to buying and selling records, the BRP inducts new members every year into the BRP Hall of Fame.
One of this year’s inductees is close to Campbell’s heart: His first cousin, Barbara Wyrick.
Wyrick was born in Dyersburg, Tenn., in 1950, and began writing songs when she was 10 years old. After graduating high school, Wyrick signed on as a staff writer with Fame Publishing in Muscle Shoals while in college at Memphis State University.
Some of her first songs included “Little Bit” for Donny Osmond and “Lovin’ You, Lovin’ Me” for Candi Staton.
Wyrick also co-wrote “Tell Me a Lie” with Mickey Buckins. It was recorded by Sami Jo in 1973, and became one of Wyrick’s most covered songs.
Wyrick later began singing background vocals, working with artists such as Hank Williams Jr., Wayne Newton, Roy Orbison, Sandra Wright, Narvel Felts and others.
Wyrick also traveled for two years with Englebert Humperdinck, and seven years with Ronnie Milsap.
In addition, Wyrick has written songs for numerous artists, including Perry Como, Andy Williams, James Brown, the Supremes, Donny Osmond, Sinead O’Connor, Crystal Gayle, Etta James, Brenda Lee, Conway Twitty, John Conley and numerous others.
The other 2014 inductee is C.L. Blast, a soul and rock and roll singer from Birmingham who also wrote music.
The induction ceremony is Aug. 17 at 2 p.m.
Campbell is excited to bring the record show to Gardendale.
“The facilities are so much better. We think attendance will be better in Gardendale because it’s such a nice facility. It’s going to upgrade our show” he said. “And this is a shot in the arm for Gardendale too; we are a well-established club.”
