It’s Wednesday, and we’ll have a venti caramel latte with extra whipped cream…
Weather: Record breakers. Every National Weather Service reporting station in the state broke records for the lowest temperature ever for July 29, as lows early this morning dipped into the middle and upper 50s. Birmingham registered a 58, while Black Creek near Gadsden went all the way down to 50. Today we’ll see sunny skies with highs in the middle 80s, and lows tonight in the lower 60s. Clouds move in on Thursday, with a chance of rain tomorrow night.
Your Starbucks fix is getting closer. If the reaction on The North Jefferson News Facebook page is any indication, the new Starbucks to be built in Gardendale will be hugely popular. The iconic coffeehouse chain has signed the papers to build a new location in the Magnolia City Center, formerly the Northgate Shopping Center. It will be a stand-alone building next to the entrance ramp off Odum Road, and will feature a drive-thru window. No word yet on the planned opening date.
Kids thwart burglary in Pinson. When a man tried to break in to a home on Highland Trace Circle on Monday morning, he didn’t realize there were two children inside. They called their mom when they heard the noise, and she called 911. Sheriff’s deputies arrived to find William Robert Thomas of Birmingham nearby – he told deputies he was jogging in the area, but couldn’t explain why his car was parked in the driveway of the home. He’s charged with burglary and theft, and is free on bond.
Sports: Big night for Big Mac. Haylie McCleney went 5-for-7 over two games, as the USA national softball team blanked he Maryland All-tars team 6-0 and 10-0 in an exhibition doubleheader just outside Washington, D.C. The Alabama outfielder and former Mortimer Jordan star was 3-for-3 in the first game with two runs batted in, and 2-for-4 in the second with an RBI triple; she also scored the run that ended the game on the mercy rule in the fifth inning. The national team is warming up for the world championships in Europe next month.
