Weather: Feeling like fall. Sunny skies are in store for today, with highs reaching just the lower 80s. Tonight we will see record low temperatures for this date, with lows dipping to the upper 50s. It will be slightly warmer on Wednesday.

Cave explorer rescued. It took almost three hours and technical rescue crews from three fire departments, but a man was finally rescued late Monday night from Bryant Cave near Smoke Rise in Blount County. The man, who remains unidentified, fell into a 50-foot vertical passageway about a quarter mile into the cave. West Blount Fire Department first got the call at around 8:30 p.m. and finally got the man out not long before midnight. No word yet on the extent of injuries sustained. You can read the full story here.

Kimberly woman killed. Polly Maria Franklin died Sunday night when her car, which was being driven by her teenage daughter, veered off of Alabama 79 just north of the Cleveland community in Blount County. Franklin was declared dead at the scene; the daughter sustained serious injuries and was taken to a local hospital.

Sports: Running a sweat shop – legally. Second-year Gardendale football coach Matt Plunkett says that “The Sweat Shop” – the name the Rockets gave to their weight room during the team’s heyday in the 1980s – is back in use as the squad gets ready for the new season in a totally-new region. The Rockets will face two Class 6A state championship contenders in Shades Valley and Clay-Chalkville, along with nearby rivals Pinson Valley and Center Point, both of whom are moving up from 5A. Plunkett and some of his players took questions Monday during the first day of Jefferson-Shelby High School Media Days at the Gardendale Civic Center; other local teams will lead off the festivities this morning.
