The company has signed papers to open a location in what is now called Magnolia City Place, the shopping center at Fieldstown and Odum roads that is home to the long-awaited Publix supermarket, currently under construction.

Starbucks will be housed in a free-standing building in the center’s parking lot, and will include a drive-thru lane.

“It will be located to the right of the entrance ramp off of Odum Road,” City Council President Stan Hogeland said.

Currently, the closest Starbucks location is in Fultondale, just inside the entrance of Target in the Promenade Shopping Center.

It’s part of the transformation of the center, which was originally named Northgate Shopping Center and was home to the city’s original location of Walmart.

Last year the center was sold to Preferred Growth Properties, which has aggressively pushed a makeover of the property. In addition to Dollar Tree moving to a new spot, a new 7,000-square-foot T.J. Maxx clothing store is going into a vacant space next to Hobby Lobby, in the old Walmart building.

“They are shooting for opening in October,” Hogeland said.

Soon after that, the developer will be adding more retail space adjacent to T.J. Maxx.

“They are building a 40-foot-high retaining wall next to Odum Road to open up more retail space there,” Hogeland said. “That’s where three more retail tenants will be.”
