Fultondale farmers market shuts down due to lack of customers

North Jefferson County will be less a farmers market starting this week.
The Fultondale Farmers Market, which was open every Wednesday, is shutting down for the rest of the season.
Tiffany Osborne, who took over as manager after Suzanne Bobo stepped down, said there were not enough customers to keep the market open.
“We had maybe five or six cars last Wednesday. I did everything I could to get traffic over there,” said Osborne, who also had a booth at the market selling homemade sauces. “This is our livelihood. This is how we make our living. If people won’t support it, we have to go to a profitable market.”
The market had dropped to having only three or four farmers every week selling their fruits and vegetables.
“Every week I had farmers canceling on me,” said Osborne. “Another farmer was already wavering. They can’t make any money.”
Mayor Jim Lowery said the market has changed locations several times in the last couple of years, including Black Creek Park, the Ashley Furniture parking lot and in front of Fultondale Elementary School.
“Wherever they wanted to go, we let them go,” said Lowery. “We put the market onto the city’s website, did ribbon cuttings, provided a location at no cost, they paid no taxes. We’ve always worked with whoever was organizing it.”
The city did not officially sponsor or fund the farmers market.
It remains unclear if the market will open next year.
Meanwhile, the Gardendale Farmers Market remains open every Thursday, 1-5 p.m., at the Gardendale Civic Center through Sept. 25. In addition, a farmer’s market in Pinson is also open each Friday, 2-6 p.m. through Oct. 31 at the Old Rock School on Pinson Blvd.
