Former three-term Fultondale mayor John McCain dies

John McCain, who served as mayor of Fultondale for a dozen years, died Tuesday after a brief illness.

McCain served on the Fultondale City Council for a single four-year term, then was elected mayor for three terms from 1984 to 1996, when he was defeated for re-election by current mayor Jim Lowery.

He was also the owner of McCain Steel Corporation for more than four decades, and was a longtime coach of youth and amateur baseball teams.

McCain passed away after a brief illness. He was 89, and is survived by his wife of 66 years, Louise, plus their sons Brent and Barry McCain and their daughter Celena Pridmore. (One son, Bruce McCain, preceded his father in death.) McCain is also survived by eight grandchildren and six great-grandchildren, plus several nieces and nephews.

Visitation will be Thursday from 6 to 8 p.m. at The New Gardendale Funeral Home, with funeral services held there Friday at 2 p.m. Burial will follow at Oakwood Memorial Gardens.
