Another local school principal’s position has been filled.
Kathy Murray, who has been in charge at Adamsville Elementary for five years, has been transferred to the same position at Snow Rogers Elementary. The transfer takes effect immediately; it was approved by the Jefferson County Board of Education in its regular monthly meeting Tuesday morning.
Murray will replace Laura Ware, who was moved from Snow Rogers to Gardendale Elementary earlier this summer.
In addition, the board approved several new assistant principals for area high schools.
Tim Reeves takes the position at Gardendale High School; he previously served as a teacher at Hewitt-Trussville High. LaVaris Thomas transfers from the Opelika schools, where he was a teacher, to become a new assistant principal at Pinson Valley High.
But the biggest item of business for the county system as a whole was the approval of a fourth deputy superintendent’s position, who would have direct oversight over roughly half the system’s schools.
The new position — officially called the deputy superintendent for school and community support — would act as a direct link between the central office and principals.
The addition comes at the recommendation of new superintendent Dr. Craig Pouncey. It would pay about $128,000 per year.
The new deputy would serve alongside Dr. Anna Vacca, the former Gardendale High School principal who is the deputy superintendent fo student support services. The move would also allow fellow deputies Dr. Yancy Morris and Dr. Shannon Stanley to focus on their specific areas; they are in charge of administrative services and teaching and learning, respectively.
Pouncey’s proposal did not meet with unanimous approval, however. Board Vice President Jacqueline Smith objected to the way the proposal was presented to the board, claiming there was little consultation beforehand between members and Pouncey. That’s part of the reason she asked the proposal to be tabled when it was first introduced at a special board meeting last week, in which Smith was presiding in place of president Jennifer Parsons, who was absent.
Pouncey said that he had discussed the matter at length with Parsons, but Smith didn’t budge. “I feel like all five of us should have been involved,” she said. “I also think we should have involved our board member-to-be, Mr. [Dean] Taylor.”
The proposal was approved by a 3-1 vote, with Smith voting against; board member Tommy Little was absent.
The board also voted to rescind bids on a project to renovate the cafeteria at Bottenfield Middle School, which had been approved earlier this year. Pouncey said that the renovations, which would have involved bringing prepared meals in from nearby Minor High School, wasn’t workable and would cause too many issues for children and staff during the school year.
