Another local school principal has been transferred by the Jefferson County Board of Education.

Reta Hayes, who has been in charge at Fultondale Elementary for 2½ years, has been transferred to Lipscomb Elementary near Bessemer.

The board made the move during a special called meeting Tuesday morning. It’s one of a series of extra meetings held since Dr. Craig Pouncey took over as superintendent two weeks ago. The system is trying to get all personnel moves in place before the school year’s early start, with faculty beginning on August 1 and students reporting to class on August 6.

In addition, FES Assistant Principal Jerry Anne Jackson has also been transferred, moving to Bryan Elementary. She replaces Sakema Porterfield, who will take over as principal at Erwin Intermediate School in Center Point.

Those moves leave two principals’ positions open in north Jefferson County. Snow Rogers Elementary still has a vacancy, after principal Laura Ware was moved from there to Gardendale Elementary. The Snow Rogers position could be filled as soon as next week.

In other business, the board tabled action recommended by Pouncey that a fourth deputy superintendent’s position be created on the system’s organization chart.

The position would essentially be a division of duties with the current deputy superintendent for school and community support, now held by former Gardendale High principal Dr. Anna Vacca. According to Pouncey, the new position would cover roughly half of the system’s schools, while Vacca would cover the other half.

It’s a variation on a scheme that the system used a few years ago, in which the system employed three area directors that each were responsible for a third of the schools. Principals reported to those directors, who in turn reported to deputy superintendents.

Pouncey’s plan would keep the idea, but would have principals directly under the two deputies.

“This would allow Dr. [Yancy] Morris and Dr. [Shannon] Stanley, the other two deputy superintendents, to focus on their specific departments,” Pouncey said.

Board Vice Chair Jacqueline Smith said she wasn’t necessarily opposed to the idea, but was apprehensive about jumping into it so soon — particularly when two of the five board members, Tommy Little and Chair Jennifer Parsons, were absent. Smith requested that action on the proposal be held off until next week’s regular meeting.

That meeting takes place Thursday at 10 a.m.
