Owner of Birmingham pet grooming business charged with animal cruelty

On June 12, the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office executed a search warrant at a pet grooming business in located at 4915 5th
Avenue S. in Birmingham.
Investigators had received information in early May that indicated the business was
operating as an animal shelter and adoption service.
Deputies removed 13 dogs and two cats from the business that were not being properly cared for. The owner of
the business was not present at the time of the search warrant, but was identified as Scott Alan Kirkland, 45, of Birmingham.
On Friday, investigators obtained arrests warrants charging Kirkland with five counts of animal cruelty and one count of operating a business without a license.
His bonds total $31,000. He remains at large.
