Weather: It’s back. Our rain-free respite was short-lived, as a line of storms will drift down from the north during the day today. Highs will be in the upper 90s with nighttime lows near 70. Rain chances are 40 percent all the way until midnight, with the best chance in the afternoon. Some storms could be strong, but likely not severe. The pattern continues for Friday.

Superintendent searches. The Gardendale Board of Education will hear the names of the five candidates that a search team from the Alabama Association of School Boards has selected to interview for the superintendent’s position. The board will met in its regular monthly session tonight at 6 p.m. in the Magnolia Suite of the Gardendale Civic Center. Meanwhile, the Jefferson County Board of Education will also meet, in a special called session today at 9 a.m. There’s nothing on the official agenda about their own search for a new superintendent, but that could change. Most actions will deal with personnel moves, but the board also will act on repairs and possible expansions at Pinson Valley High School’s football field, as well as repairs to the tornado-damaged roof at North Jefferson Middle.

Hip-hop card fraud. Gardendale Police and several other law enforcement agencies are hunting five men and one woman who are charged with 164 different felony counts, all part of an effort to finance the “Hood Dynasty” rap group from Birmingham and their day-to-day operations. Police say the gang stole credit- and debit-card data and created fraudulent cards using the stolen numbers, buying gift cards with them. The charges came after a raid in Irondale turned up evidence of the crimes. The scheme is similar to one run by three men a couple of weeks ago. The “Hood Dynasty” suspects remain at large.

Sports: Bonus hockey. Sudden-death overtime games have occurred frequently in this year’s Stanley Cup Playoffs, and the first game of the Cup finals continued the trend. Justin Williams’ snap shot almost five minutes into the extra period won the game for the Los Angeles Kings by a 3-2 score. The Kings came back after the New York Rangers scored twice in the first 15 minutes. Game 2 is Saturday (6 p.m., NBC)… Baseball: So long, Zim. Don Zimmer, who was a part of organized pro baseball for parts of eight different decades as a player, coach and manager, died Wednesday in Tampa, where had served as a senior adviser to the Rays for the last 10 years. One of the true characters of the game, Zimmer started out in the minor leagues in 1949, and played 12 seasons in the majors. He managed four different teams and was an assistant for several more. An injury he suffered when he was beaned by a pitch in the minors led to the adoption of batting helmets. “Zim” bumped his uniform number up annually to match his tenure in baseball, finishing with 66. Zimmer died of heart and kidney problems; he was 83.
