- A campaigner for state Sen. Scott Beason of Gardendale stands outside the Mt. Olive Community Center during Tuesday's elections. Beason is one of seven candidates in the Republican primary for the Sixth District seat in the U.S. House of Representatives.
The Republican primaries for seats in the U.S. House of Representatives and the Alabama Senate may have drawn crowded fields, but they don’t seem to have drawn many voters to the polls.
Despite nice weather, light turnout has been reported at local polling places as of 2:30 p.m. The precinct at the Mt. Olive Community Center had drawn just 365 voters, for instance.
Seven GOP candidates are vying for the Congressional seat being vacated by Rep. Spencer Bachus, who is retiring after 11 terms in office. Seven other Republicans are trying to win the District 17 seat in the state Senate, which Sen. Scott Beason is giving up to run for Bachus’ place in Congress. Runoff elections are expected in both races; those will take place on July 15.
Polls will be open until 7 p.m. this evening. Voters are reminded that photo identification, such as a driver’s license, is now required in order to vote.
