A woman from the Warrior area is one of two people killed in a six-vehicle crash on Interstate 20/59 on Thursday evening.
The Jefferson County Coroner’s office identified the woman as Colleen Shields, 39. Shields was driving westbound on the freeway between I-65 and Arkadelphia Road when the car she was driving was hit by an SUV coming in the other direction, which had crossed over the median and into the oncoming traffic, according to Birmingham Police.
Several other cars hit, or were hit by, the SUV. The driver of the SUV was also killed; his name has not been released pending notification of next of kin.
The wreck occurred at about 7 p.m., and tied up traffic in both directions for several hours. Police closed off ramps from I-65 to I-20/59 and diverted traffic onto surface streets well into the night.
The cause of the crash is still under investigation.
