The Jefferson County Board of Education has parted ways with Superintendent Stephen Nowlin, at least to a point.

The board approved an amended version of Nowlin’s contract that designates him as a consultant for the remainder of his contract, and continues his regular monthly salary for 14 months. He will then be paid a lump-sum buyout of more than $219,000, equal to a year’s salary.

Nowlin was notified that the board wanted to buy out the remainder of his contract on April 25.

“This is not a move that has been made in haste,” board president Jennifer Parsons said. “If things aren’t working the way they should be, it’s important we observe that and take action.”

“This has not been sudden. It may appear to be, but it isn’t sudden,” board member Tommy Little said. “This agreement is beneficial to both parties.”

Parsons said an interim superintendent will be appointed quickly, perhaps as soon as a scheduled meeting Thursday morning.
