May Day! May Day! Well, it is the first of May after all…
Weather: That’s more like it. It will be sunny and slightly cooler than normal today, with highs in the upper 60s. Tonight will be clear and cool with lows around 50. Friday will see more clear skies, with highs near 70 and lows in the upper 40s. We’ll see a warming trend begin this weekend, with no rain in sight for the next seven days.
Alternative school, sort of. Jefferson County Schools Deputy Superintendent Dr. Yancey Morris told The North Jefferson News on Wednesday that there are plans in place to move students from the tornado-damaged school to other nearby facilities, if the school isn’t suitable for classes next week. No decision has been made in any direction yet, he added. Morris toured the school along with insurance adjusters on Wednesday.
Sports: Gann-tastic. Pinson Valley forward Tori Gann scored five goals and assisted on two others, as the Indians made easy work of Parker with a 10-0 victory in 43 minutes in the first round of the Class 5A playoffs. Savannah Hudson, Tori Brown, Janise Edwards, Laurel Uhomba and Jessica Stacy also scored a goal each, the latter two on penalties. The Tribe moves on to host Moody in the second round on Saturday. On the boys’ side, Jordan Walton scored four goals as Pinson Valley routed Paul Bryant 9-2 to win their first-round playoff. The Tribe will host Walker on Saturday… Softball: Pinson Valley lost their opening game 3-0 to Springville in their 5A area tournament game at Moody. Pitcher Lauren Keplinger gave up four hots and no earned runs, but also issued seven walks. The Indians stayed alive by whipping Center Point 17-2 in three innings in the loser’s bracket game. Pinson will again face Springville at 2 p.m. today in an elimination game. Elsewhere today, the Class 5A Area 12 tournament is one of several playoffs getting under way today. At Hayden, second-ranked Curry will play No. 5 Mortimer Jordan at 1 p.m., with the top-ranked Wildcats playing Walker immediately afterward.
