The Wallace State Concert Band will perform two shows to send the Arts in April celebration out in style. The band will host a concert at 9:30 a.m., April 29, and at 7 p.m., May 1. Both performances are free and open to the public. They will be held in the Recital Hall of the Burrow Center for Fine and Performing Arts.

Under the direction of Terry Ownby, the programs will include a range of concert band standards. The selection includes “His Honor” by 1930s bandmaster Henry Filmore, “New World Variations” by David Shaffer, an arrangement of “Bolero — Ravel” by Jay Bocook, “In Flight” by Samuel Hazo, and compilation of Henry Mancini’s biggest hits.

Ownby said he chose works by these composers because they represent the best in the concert band genre.

“As a composer, Filmore’s irrepressible talent for marches produced a string of masterpieces uniquely of his own flavor and among the most outstanding of them is the ‘His Honor,’” Ownby said.

With David Shaffer’s “New World Variations,” Ownby said all sections of the band will get a chance to shine in the creative variations, with the woodwinds getting plenty of opportunity to show off their technique.

Jay Bocook’s arrangement of “Bolera — Ravel” is magnificent, Ownby said. “The signature building of intensity throughout the work, from the quiet opening to the powerful and explosive finish, will take your breath away,” he said.

“In Flight” by Samuel Hazo is a contemporary composition, Ownby said. “The piece opens with a rapid•fire brass fanfare, followed by woodwinds being featured on new melodic content,” he said. “This piece is a great vehicle to feature the percussion section and features outstanding writing.”

The piece featuring the work of Henry Mancini may be the most recognizable, as the composer has written theme songs for television and film. Selections will include “The Pink Panther,” “Moon River,” “Baby Elephant Walk,” “Dreamsville” and the theme from the television show “Peter Gunn.”
