- Gardendale pitcher Cris Gant struck out 11 batters in her team's 4-3 win over Hewitt-Trussville in nine innings on Tuesday. It was her fifth game so far this season with 10 or more strikeouts.
Gardendale had to answer the call not once, but twice to earn a 4-3 Area 12 softball victory over Hewitt-Trussville in nine innings Tuesday.
After seen scoreless innings, the Rockets overcame two base-running errors to tie the game at 1-1 on a Kayleigh Maze hit that brought home Carrigan Fain in the eighth inning.
Then, after a two-run single by Taylor Beshears put the Huskies up again in the ninth, the Rockets won it when they loaded the bases on a walk, a busted fielder’s choice and an error. Cris Gant and Fain drove in runs on back-to-back hits, then Kaylee Jury drove in the winning run when she hit a sacrifice fly to center field, allowing Claire Lumpkin to tag up and score.
Gant had another solid outing in the circle, striking out 12 Hewitt batters — her fifth game this season in which she has tallied 10 or more strikeouts. She scattered eight hits.
“It means so much to us to have Cris in the circle, she is so steady,” Rockets coach Haley Lawson said.
Fain was 3-for-4 at the plate for the day. Gant went 2-for-5, Maze 2-for-3 and Katlyn Bailey was 2-for-2.
Kallie Shields gave up 10 hits and four walks in 8-1/3 innings in the loss for Hewitt.
