Garden tip: Fertilize your lilacs, roses and all families of grapes in April, around April 20.

• The North End Council of Garden Clubs are working to put all the ends together for the annual North End Flower Show on April 3-4. If you are homeschooling young children and they would like to enter the flower show, call any of the members of the garden clubs in this area. Junior, intermediate and teens are welcome to enter the show. Judy Burton is the director of the flower show and Margie Thomas is helping. Patricia Tate is also a co-director. All of the North End Council of Garden Clubs are helping. Blue Star will have three junior members and two intermediate members entering the show. You are invited to visit the flower show; admission is free. You will enjoy the flower designs, horticulture, educational and other entries.

• Warrior Lions Club has the new 2014 historical calendars for sale at $6 each. They still have the pecans for sale at $15. They are cracked. You need to pick up your pecans soon because they are going fast. They can be found at Ace Hardware, Young’s Grocery in Trafford and R&R Pharmacy. They are at other stores also.

• Warrior Armory is the location for the arts and craft show March 28 from noon to 6 p.m. and March 29 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. The show is inside and booth rental is available. Contact Janie McCallie at 743-8608 or janie4mk@jmail.com or call Connie Short at 215-6114 or agelesshd@bellsouth.net.

• Happy birthday greetings to: Barbara Creel and Debbie Moore on March 28; a special young man, Bryan Blackmon, on March 30; Dianna “Dee Dee” Eady, Faye Whitlow and Libby Stephon on April 1; Jewel Owens and Angela Huguley on April 2. May all have the best birthday ever.

• The Blue Star Garden Club met March 20 at the Gardendale Civic Center for their regular meeting. Those present were Jearl Jones, Emily Lennox, Carol Lennox, Yvonne Gamble, Linda Mayfield, Mary Sanders, Faye Whitlow, Martha Absher, Libby Stephon, Patricia Akers and Evangeline Sloan. We missed Hank Cassidy and Bea and Frank Wideman. The program was presented by Emily Lennox on hummingbirds. She also read a poem. Evangeline Sloan did an all green bouquet. Jearl Jones gave a plant study about ferns and how they grow and multiply. The hostess were Yvonne Gamble, Jearl Jones and Evangeline Sloan. Mary brought a hummingbird cake as a special surprise.

• Emily Lennox won two special ribbons for competing in a speech contest. we sure love this young lady who is becoming a great gardener. Great going, Emily!
