The next step has been taken toward the construction of Pinson’s new city park.

The final drawings from the Goodwyn Mills and Cawood Architectural firm were accepted by the Pinson City Council in Thursday’s regular session.

The resolution to accept the drawings also authorized Mayor Hoyt Sanders to receive bids for the project.

The council made a few slight alterations in the plans before voting to approve them. Those revisions were the last in a process that began nearly a year ago.

In other business, the council expanded a project to repave parking lots and driveways at the Palmerdale Homesteads Community Center. The council received a bid of $1,700 from Campbell’s Paving, with the city providing the asphalt.

The original plan was for the areas around the front of the walkway and the side entrance to be repaved and striped. But after discussion, the council decided instead to repave nearly the entire parking lot, at a cost roughly twice the original bid.

Sanders also reported that the Pinson Valley Youth Association’s newly-acquired six-wheel utility vehicle was not proving to be useful because of turning-radius issues. The council authorized trading the vehicle for a four-wheel “mule” vehicle that would be better suited for dragging ball fields and similar uses.

Councilman Joe Cochran mentioned the increasing number of “UBEVs” — unlawful breaking and entering vehicles — that had been reported recently in the Pinson, Clay and Trussville areas. Cochran reminded residents to keep their vehicles locked at all times.
