Morris councilman Corey Jones resigns because of move

A north Jefferson County town is losing a council member this month.
Corey Jones, a councilman for Morris, is moving to Clay, meaning he can no longer serve on the Morris council.
Jones turned in his resignation Tuesday at a city council meeting; it was effective immediately.
Mayor Joe Pylant said the council would appoint another citizen to fill the position at the next council meeting, set for March 25. He said Jones has done good work and will be missed; Jones received a round of applause from the council and the audience.
Jones headed the public safety committee.
Also on Tuesday, the council voted to switch to Charter Communications for telephone and internet service for town hall, the police department, fire department and senior citizens center.
Council members approved spending a total of $513 a month plus $400 for installation for Charter.
The town had switched to AT&T U-verse recently, but Pylant said employees have had numerous problems with the service and it is not working efficiently for the town, including the transfer of telephone calls.
City officials want to remind citizens that the telephone number for city hall is 647-0596, the police department is 647-0597 and the fire department is 647-1400.
In other business, the council:
• approved routine maintenance on police and fire vehicles
• approved the spending of up to $150 for the programming and installation of a police radio for a police car
• turned down a request from Police Chief Mike Nazarchyk for raises for police officers. “The money’s just not there right now,” Pylant said.
• approved spending up to $850 to repair the heating system at the fire department
• approved the purchase of 10 section of hose for the fire department; the town will be reimbursed through a Cawaco grant
• approved spending up to $250 for a new printer for city hall
• amended the holiday schedule, which had listed incorrect days of the week for Christmas and Christmas Eve.
