Baseball: Corner drops pair in tri-series at Springville

Corner came up short in both ends of a baseball tri-series Saturday at Springville, losing 3-0 to the host Tigers and 5-1 to Pell City.

In the opening game against Springville, the Yellow Jackets were held to just three hits by Tiger pitcher Casey Mize, who tallied nine strikeouts with no walks.

Jake Tribble put the home team on the board when he hit a line-dive single to second base that scored a run. Tribble did it again in the sixth with a liner to center, and then scored then John David Nolan hit down the third base line.

Dillon McCaleb was 2-for-3 for Corner, but never made it past second.

Kevin Bryant started for the Jackets, but was pulled in the sixth after giving up all three runs on four hits.

In the second game against the Panthers, Corner mustered only two hits against pitcher Tanner Richey, who went the distance. The Jackets’ only run came in the fifth on back-to-back doubles by Levi Green and Devne Daniel.

Pell City put the game out of reach with three runs in the top of fifth, made possible in part by aggressive baserunning. Dan Holmes was 2-for-3 and drove in two runs, Richey also went 2-for-3, driving in one run and scoring another.

Jackson Tavel, who came in to pitch after starter Michael Savage was yanked after one inning, got the loss after allowing two runs (one earned) and four hits in four innings, despite fanning six Panther hitters.

Corner (4-5) hosts Minor in their first game of the Jefferson County Schools Tournament on Monday.
