Pinson’s main road gets a new name

The main street through the city of Pinson is now a boulevard.
The Pinson City Council voted in Thursday’s regular session to rename the street that runs through the heart of the commercial district as Pinson Boulevard, replacing a mishmash of confusing and sometimes contradictory names.
Street signs along the stretch of road variously identify it as Center Point Road, Center Point Parkway or simply Highway 75, which is its designation as an Alabama state highway. At one intersection, signs on opposite corners carry different names.
The renaming is in effect from the intersection with Alabama 151, where the road turns east toward Palmerdale and Oneonta, southward to Saturn Lane.
The council also renewed its contract with the Clay-Pinson Chamber of Commerce for the Alabama Butterbean Festival, in which the city will pay the chamber $10,000 to purchase advertising and also provide numerous in-kind services and contributions for the festival.
Chamber director Ronnie Dixon discussed last year’s festival and plans for the 2014 event, including various changes in the location of performance stages, as well as having carnival rides set up for three nights — the minimum most operators would commit to, he said.
Dixon also said he was seeking a long-term sponsorship commitment from the California Lima Bean Growers Association, which sponsored last year’s fireworks display and also sent thousands of bags of butter beans to be distributed to attendees. A commitment might include purchasing a new “Bucky Bean” mascot costume for the festival, of a quality similar to that used for college sports mascots.
“We’ve made little changes [in the festival] over the year,” Dixon said. “It’s kind of time for a big step.”
The council also passed an amended resolution for demolishing a nuisance structure at 6201 Kaley Lane. The resolution was amended to correct an error in the previous version.
